Meet Frank.
For around 35 years, I really only knew him as my "grandfather."
A few years before his passing, and well before I founded Your Own Story, he and I filmed his legacy video.
He showed a kind of joy that day that I had never seen before, as he relived the most important moments of his life and answered questions that, honestly, no one had ever asked him before.
I shared his joy, as story after story taught me who he really was: an authentic, complex person — so much more than my "Grandpa." I met the Brooklyn Sicilian who grew up in the Depression, joined the Navy to see the world, proposed to my grandmother SIX times before she said "yes," went to night classes at Fordham University because he worked all day to support grandmother and their three daughters, and who lived by a set of values that I aspire to every day.
I had known my Grandpa my whole life, but it wasn't until we made his legacy video that I really met Frank.
He passed in 2020, and I wish I'd had the chance to really know him for longer than I got to, but my family and I find consolation and sparks of joy in the parts of him that remain in his video: his sly manner, the warm gravel in his Brooklyn-Italian voice, and many, many stories that seem to teach us something different with every viewing.
It's because of Frank that I started this company. I want to help people feel the way he did, reliving his life's stories and realizing their value; and I want their families to feel the way I do, having those stories and memories saved.
